This year we got 100 new emoji added to our keyboard. We finally can send our friend a mango, a roll of toilet paper, a DNA or a petri dish. But are these really the images that we need to communicate? And how is this selection made? For example: why do we have a salt shaker but no peper shaker?
Since emoji are designed with so many details, things are automatically excluded. When Shigetaka Kurita designed the first emoji in 1999, they could only consist of 12 by 12 pixels. It resulted in a beautiful set of images that you could not find beautiful or ugly. They were more like pictograms.
Pixelated emoji set is a translation of de newest emoji symbols into de original 12 by 12 pixel format. What do you think? Do you recognize the concepts? Are they more inclusive?
